How to develop a marketing strategy

Developing a successful marketing strategy takes time, and the difference between a good strategy and a well thought-out objectives-led strategy can make all the difference to your business.

Think of it like planting a garden. You could easily drive down to your local Bunnings, grab a couple of bags of soil, some seeds, maybe some fertiliser, come home and throw it altogether and wait for it to grow. Only to realise the soil you bought is not right for seeds and the fertiliser is actually lawn care.

Instead, you need to stop and think about the objectives for your garden: how do I want my garden to look, what plants do I want to grow, do I want to attract bees and birds, and I’d love for my visitors to comment on and admire the beauty of my garden.

Similarly in marketing, you need to stop and think about your business objectives:

  • Where do I want to be in five years time? (vision)
  • How do I want customers to feel about my business and my products / services? (brand)
  • What sorts of customers do I want to attract? (target markets)
  • How do I develop my marketing to appeal to my target market AND reflect my brand at the same time?

Marketing can be expensive if it’s not done right, but developing a well-thought out strategy, linked to your business objectives will help set you off on the right track. It will also act as a compass as your business progresses, helping to steer you in the right direction.
